Student Mode — Remotely Controlling a Student's Device
Note: To use this function, both devices must be logged into the same Speech Kingdom account.
Sessions
Before we can understand how to remotely connect a student's device, it is important to know about Speech Kingdom Sessions.
All of Speech Kingdom's activities take place in Sessions. When a student plays a game, such as What's Missing, it happens in a What's Missing game session. When a student views a story, such as Safety Around Strangers, it happens in a Safety Around Strangers story session.
Sessions live as long as they are active and the game or story is running. This provides the flexibility for you to join that session with another device, such as a smartphone, tablet or computer. Once there are two devices in the session, you can grant separate permissions to each device, allowing one device to control of the other.

Student Controls
In our illustration, student Bob has just started a story called Safety Around Strangers (beginner level). In the first illustration, we have expanded the Student Controls section in the Settings menu. These settings allow us to limit the functionality of Bob's iPad. We have set the Student Controls so Bob's iPad cannot
Student Mode settings will not take effect until Student Mode is ON. Set Bob's Student Mode to ON.
Notice what happened when we set Student Mode to ON. All Student Mode settings are now protected, cannot be changed and display their current values. In this case all are OFF.
Student Mode
When Bob starts the story, by clicking the Start Beginner Level button, the Previous and Next buttons and the exit icon < in the top left corner of the screen will disappear. Since most of the Side Bar Menu options cause navigation, they are disabled and gray. The Scene Browser option on the Settings Menu disappears and the Scene Browser link (Scene 1/6) at the lower left is also disabled and gray. Bob's device is in Student Mode because all of the student mode settings have been activated by setting the Student Mode switch to the ON position. Bob no longer has control over any navigation functions, such as changing the scene or exiting the session. His audio perseveration has also been limited to 3 times. |
Note: For a discussion and a description of the Side Bar Menu, please see the Help page on this site and select the Side Bar Menu topic.
Connecting to the Student's Device
The final step in the process is to connect the adult device to the student device that is now in Student Mode. In our example, Bob will be unable to perform any of the navigation (next, previous, browse or exit) functions, so we will be sure that the connected adult's device can perform all of those functions for her. Bob's adult, Mary has just logged into Bob's account on a different device. She activated the Side Bar Menu by clicking the menu "hamburger" icon (3 lines) at the top left corner of the screen. For more information about the Side Bar Menu, visit the Help Page on this site and select the Side Bar Menu option. Note the Sessions area which is circled on this illustration. It shows that Bob Samuels has the Proficient version of Safety Around Strangers active. Mary must must now click the blue Join button to join Bob's session. Mary is now in control of Bob's device! Every time she advances the story, it will advance on Bob's device! All activity on either device will be reflected on both devices!! Surprise your student with a Reinforcer Reward! On the adult's device, click the gear icon to bring up the Story Settings menu as illustrated here. Now click the Activate Reinforcer option and the currently selected reinforcer will play on both devices. Alternatively, you can select any reinforcer from the Reinforcers option in the Story Settings menu. |
Why connect?
- Students often perseverate, press buttons, repeat behaviors and get distracted by options on their devices. By controlling the student's device, the adult can limit this behavior to a minimum and focus their student on the game or story, while completely controlling the pace.
- The adult can select the Activate Reinforcer option from the Settings Menu and surprise their student with a reinforcer at any time.
